The brief

A new retail business was opening in York city centre and needed a complete electrical fit-out from scratch. The product on display was going to be the centrepiece, so the lighting wasn’t just about illumination, it was about presentation. Every piece needed to look its absolute best.

The owner had a clear vision: a warm, inviting space inspired by Japanese design, with clean lines, natural materials, and lighting that draws the eye to the product without feeling harsh or clinical. The challenge was delivering commercial-grade electrics that felt effortless.

Before — existing fittings, ready for refurb

The unit came with a tired older track lighting setup and dated socket positions that wouldn’t suit the new shop layout. Everything needed to come out and be redesigned around how the space was actually going to work.

What I did

Perimeter track lighting
A full perimeter track system with individually adjustable spotlights, so the owner can direct light precisely onto display cases, counters, and feature pieces. Every spotlight points where it earns its keep.
Lighting behind shoji panels
Wired lighting behind the Japanese-style screen panels along the rear wall, creating a soft, diffused ambient glow that transforms the feel of the space. Two layers of light: focused on the product, soft on the room.
Hidden counter power
Power runs to the L-shaped service counter for POS terminals, a desk lamp for close-up work, and workshop equipment behind the till. All cabling hidden inside the joinery, nothing visible from the customer side.
Wall sockets replaced and repositioned
Every wall socket replaced, the layout redrawn around how staff and customers actually move through the space. No leftover socket positions from a previous tenant’s fit-out.

The result

A space where the electrics are invisible and the product is the star. Not a cable in sight, just beautiful lighting and seamless power, delivered to a commercial standard.

“Frankie is a pleasure to work with. Highly skilled and professional, his work speaks for itself and we couldn’t be happier with the wiring and light installation on our retail store in York. Highly recommend and we certainly look forward to working with Bright Sparks of York on future projects.”

Got a retail or commercial fit-out coming up?

The principle behind this project applies to any commercial space where the lighting and the layout have to work as hard as the staff. Whether it’s a shop, a salon, a restaurant, or an office, the approach is the same: understand how the space will actually be used, design the electrics around that, and hide everything that doesn’t need to be seen.

If you’ve got a fit-out coming up, even a small one, get me in early. Decisions made before the joinery goes in are far cheaper than retrofits afterwards.
