The electrical scope of a gate installation

Most electric gate installations involve two separate contractors: the gate installer who handles the mechanical hardware (the gate itself, the motor, the posts), and the electrician who handles the power supply and any associated low-voltage wiring. This page covers the electrical scope.

The electrical work is almost always a new outdoor circuit — a dedicated power supply run from the consumer unit to the gate location. It’s notifiable under Part P, which means it needs to be done by a registered electrician who can certify the work.

Power supply circuit

A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit, sized for the gate motor’s current draw and the cable run length. Protected by an RCBO with 30mA RCD function. Run in SWA (armoured) cable underground to the gate location.

Weatherproof termination point

The underground cable terminates in an IP65-rated enclosure at the gate motor location. The gate installer connects their motor to this supply point. Clean, correctly terminated, and accessible for future maintenance.

Intercom and access control wiring

If the gate system includes an intercom, keypad, fob receiver, or loop detector, the associated cabling can be run at the same time as the power supply. Low-voltage data cabling for the intercom and any sensor feeds.

Indoor intercom wiring

If the intercom handset needs to be located inside the property, the associated cabling runs from the gate to the internal handset position — typically a door entry point in the hallway or kitchen.

Why the cable route matters most

The biggest variable in electric gate wiring cost is the cable route from the consumer unit to the gate. A gate at the front of a terraced property in York might only be 8 metres from the consumer unit, mostly under a path. A gate at the end of a long driveway on a detached property might be 30+ metres away, with tarmac or block paving to cross.

Before getting in touch, it’s useful to know roughly how far the gate is from the consumer unit and what surfaces the cable would need to pass under. That information lets me give a realistic price estimate quickly. If the route involves lifting and reinstating tarmac or block paving, that’s typically done by a groundworker — I can advise on the approach and sequence of the work.

FAQ — electric gate wiring York

Does electric gate wiring need Part P certification?

Yes. A new outdoor circuit for a gate motor is notifiable under Part P. As an NICEIC Approved Contractor I self-certify the work and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate on completion. This is the document your insurer and solicitor may ask for.

Do I need the gate installed before the electrician comes?

Not necessarily — the electrical groundwork (trenching and running the cable) can happen at any point. What I need to know is the final position of the gate motor and the route the cable will take. Often it makes sense to run the cable as part of the same groundworks as the gate post installation, to avoid having to dig twice.

Can the gate run from an existing outdoor socket?

Not ideally. A gate motor on an existing outdoor socket circuit shares that circuit’s capacity with everything else connected to it, and if the socket is on a ring main the RCD protection may not be sufficient. A dedicated circuit is the right approach — it’s more reliable and correctly protected.

How long does electric gate wiring take?

Most residential gate wiring jobs are a half-day to a full day, depending on cable run length. If the route requires significant trenching, the trenching itself takes most of the time.
