Farm Wiring & Agricultural Electrical Work Near York
Power distribution, outbuilding supplies, three-phase connections, livestock building safety. Agricultural environments need a different approach to domestic or commercial work — I specify for the conditions, not just the minimum standard.
Why farm wiring is different
Agricultural environments are harder on electrical installations than almost any other setting. Dust and chaff get into enclosures. Rodents chew cables. Pressure washing sends water into fittings that aren't sealed properly. Livestock — horses particularly — are significantly more sensitive to stray voltage than humans, and an earth fault that a person might not notice can be dangerous or fatal to an animal.
The standard for farm wiring is BS 7671 like everywhere else, but the specification decisions — IP ratings, cable types, earthing arrangements, RCD protection — are where agricultural work diverges from a domestic socket addition. Get those decisions wrong and equipment fails early or people and animals are at risk.
I work on farm properties around York and across North Yorkshire. I understand what the environment does to electrical installations and I specify accordingly.
What I cover
Power distribution
Main distribution boards, sub-boards in individual buildings, outbuilding supplies via underground SWA cable. Each building with its own isolator and RCD protection.
Three-phase supplies
Three-phase connections for pumps, grain dryers, compressors, workshop machinery, and other high-demand agricultural equipment. DNO application handled where required.
Livestock building safety
Horses and cattle are more vulnerable to electrical faults than humans. Correct earthing, equipotential bonding, and 30mA RCD protection are non-negotiable in any building with animals.
IP-rated enclosures & cable protection
IP65 or IP66 enclosures as standard in dusty or wet environments. Steel conduit or armoured cable where mechanical protection is needed. Nothing that can't survive a pressure wash.
Outbuilding & barn power
Lighting, sockets, and dedicated circuits for barns, workshops, grain stores, and ancillary buildings. Separate consumer unit in each building with RCD protection throughout.
Security & yard lighting
PIR floodlights, perimeter lighting, CCTV power supplies for farm yards and rural estate buildings. IP65 fittings, armoured cable, out-of-hours installation available.
