Bringing a Romanian Orthodox Church to Life — A Complete Lighting Renovation

Sometimes a job comes along that’s unlike anything you’ve done before. This was one of those.

A Romanian Orthodox church had recently undergone a remarkable transformation. A monk had spent months hand-painting extraordinary murals across every wall and ceiling, floor-to-ceiling iconography covering the entire interior. Biblical scenes, saints, intricate patterns between the arched windows. The kind of artwork you’d expect to see in a centuries-old cathedral, created right here in the UK.

There was just one problem. When the paintings were finished and the congregation stepped back to take it all in, the existing lighting let the whole thing down. Imagine spending months creating a masterpiece, then hanging it in a dimly lit room, that’s essentially what had happened.

How We Got Involved

We were brought in on a personal recommendation. When I first visited, I could immediately see the challenge, and the opportunity. The ceilings sit at around 15 metres above ground level, the space is filled with ornate chandeliers and a detailed wooden iconostasis (the screen separating the nave from the altar), and every surface is covered in hand-painted murals that needed to be lit evenly and sensitively.

This wasn’t a job for standard commercial fittings. The church needed specialist lighting designed for exactly this kind of environment.

Working with KSR to Design the Solution

We partnered with KSR, a lighting manufacturer that specialises in fittings for heritage and ecclesiastical environments. Together, we designed a complete lighting array that would achieve two things:

Full illumination for everyday services, even, warm light that brings out the colours in the murals and fills the entire space without harsh spots or shadows. The congregation needed to see the artwork as the monk intended it to be seen.

A separate mood lighting scene for midnight services, a subtler setup that washes the beautiful wooden barrel-vaulted ceiling with soft light, creating an intimate, atmospheric feel for late-night worship. Think of it like having two completely different rooms in one, bright and welcoming by day, warm and contemplative by night.

The Practical Challenges

Working at 15 metres isn’t something you do with a set of ladders. The entire church was scaffolded from floor to ceiling, with walkways running along both sides of the nave at height.

Every fitting had to be positioned for the right light angle and to stay as unobtrusive as possible. When the lights are on, you should notice the artwork, not the fittings. The KSR units were chosen specifically because they’re compact, discreet, and designed to blend into heritage environments.

Cabling had to be routed sensitively too. In a space like this, you can’t just surface-mount trunking across a hand-painted wall. Every cable run was planned to be hidden or to follow the existing architectural lines of the building.

The Result

The difference is night and day, literally. Where the murals once looked flat and muted under the old lighting, they now glow with the depth and richness the monk put into them. The blues, golds, and reds in the iconography come alive. The wooden ceiling, which was almost invisible before, is now a feature in its own right during evening services.

The church left a 5-star Google review with two words that said it all: “Very professional!”

Why This Matters

You might be thinking “I don’t have a church that needs lighting”, and fair enough. But the principle behind this project applies to any space where lighting makes or breaks the experience. Whether it’s a restaurant that needs the right ambience, a listed building that needs sensitive electrical work, or simply a living room where the lighting doesn’t feel right, the approach is the same: understand what the space needs, work with the right products, and design a solution, not just install some fittings.

If you’ve got a lighting project that needs more thought than usual, we’d love to hear about it.
