Lost Power? Something Doesn't Look Right?

Electrical emergency in York? Call and I'll tell you straight whether it needs same-day attention, phone advice, or a booked appointment. NICEIC Approved, certified to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, and I'll not leave you in a dangerous situation if I can help it.

What counts as an electrical emergency?

Not every electrical issue needs an emergency call-out. Here is how we triage it on the phone:

Call now

Total power loss, burning smell from sockets or the consumer unit, sparking or arcing, exposed or damaged wiring, RCD that will not reset, water ingress into electrical fittings, or anything that feels immediately dangerous.

Can wait until morning

A single socket not working, a stopped light fitting, intermittent tripping on one circuit (others still working), or cosmetic issues. Worth fixing, not at emergency rates.

Not sure? Call anyway. I would talk you through it and save you the call-out than have you worrying all night about something potentially dangerous. 01904 530 735

What to do while waiting

Five safe steps while I'm on the way:

  1. Isolate the fault if you canIf you smell burning or see scorch marks, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit. If you cannot identify the circuit, use the main switch to cut all power.
  2. Do not open fittingsDo not unscrew sockets, switches or light fittings to investigate. Do not attempt repairs. Keep people and pets away from anything that looks damaged.
  3. Check neighboursIf all your power is off, check if neighbours are too. If yes, it is a Northern Powergrid supply issue (0800 011 3332), not your installation.
  4. Unplug affected appliancesIf a specific socket or appliance is the source, unplug everything in that area. Do not plug back into nearby sockets on the same circuit.
  5. Risk to life, call 999 firstElectric shock, fire, or someone trapped by a live fault is a 999 call. I come in afterwards to isolate the circuit and make safe.

A note on cost

Emergency rates are higher than standard rates because I drop whatever I'm doing and travel. I confirm the applicable rate on the phone before I set off, and I always break down the call-out time and any materials on the invoice. No surprises.

If the problem turns out to be something you can resolve yourself (a tripped RCD, a supply issue), I'll tell you that on the phone and you pay nothing.

24 hour electrician in York — coverage across the city and surrounding villages

I cover York city and every village inside the ring road plus ten miles out. That's Acomb, Haxby, Strensall, Huntington, Fulford, Bishopthorpe, Copmanthorpe, Stamford Bridge, and the smaller villages between. No travel premium, no routing through a call centre, no subcontracting to whoever's free.

After 8pm the out-of-hours rate is £120+VAT for the first hour plus materials, then £100+VAT per hour. I confirm the rate on the phone before I set off — you never agree to a price after the work is already done. If the fix sounds simple I'll talk you through it for free rather than send an invoice for something you could reset yourself.

For a genuine electrical emergency in York — burning smell, power fully off, RCD that won't reset, exposed live conductor after an accident — call 01904 530 735 or WhatsApp with a photo. That's the quickest route to a realistic ETA.

Emergency Electrician York, FAQs

How quickly can you get to me in York?

For genuine emergencies I aim to respond the same day, often within a few hours depending on location and what I'm currently attending. I cover York and surrounding villages. I'll always give you a realistic ETA on the phone instead of a promise I cannot keep.

Is a burning smell from a socket an emergency?

Yes. A burning smell from a socket, switch or consumer unit is a genuine emergency. Stop using the socket immediately, do not plug into nearby sockets, and if the smell persists or you see discolouration, turn off the main switch and call us.

My RCD keeps tripping, is that an emergency?

It depends. Trips immediately every reset, or will not reset at all: active fault, same-day. Trips occasionally and resets fine: worth diagnosing but not urgent. Call and describe what is happening. I can often advise over the phone.

Do you charge for phone advice?

No. If I can talk you through resetting a tripped RCD, or identifying that the fault is with the supply instead of your installation, I do that for free. I would save you the call-out before taking it if the fix is simple.

Are you available weekends and bank holidays?

Emergency call-outs are subject to availability at weekends and bank holidays. Give me a ring and I'll let you know straight away. I'll not leave you in a dangerous situation if I can help it.

What if my whole street has lost power?

If neighbours have also lost power, the fault is with Northern Powergrid instead of your installation. Call their 24-hour fault line on 0800 011 3332, they manage the network in York. If only your property is off, the fault is on your side and I can help.

How much will it cost?

I confirm the applicable rate on the phone before setting off. Emergency rates are higher than standard rates, and any materials are billed separately. I never bill for a job I haven't first talked through with you.
