Your local electrician in Dringhouses

I'm Frankie — an NICEIC approved electrician based in York, covering Dringhouses, Woodthorpe, and the Tadcaster Road corridor. Dringhouses has a proper mix of housing — from period properties near Askham Bog to post-war estates on the Knavesmire side. Whatever era your home is from, I'll survey it properly, explain what's needed, and give you an honest estimate before touching a wire.

Electrical work in Dringhouses — what I typically see

Post-war estates — St Helens Road, Heron Avenue, Nelson's Lane
Much of Dringhouses' residential area was built in the 1950s-70s, and these properties are now at the age where consumer units and wiring deserve a proper look. The wiring might still be functional, but the consumer unit is often the weak link — old rewirable fuses that don't offer the same protection as a modern board with RCBOs. I'll do an EICR to give you a clear picture of where everything stands.

Period properties — Tadcaster Road and Askham Bog side
The older properties along Tadcaster Road and near Askham Bog have their own character — and their own electrical challenges. Some of these houses are over a century old, with wiring that's been extended and modified over generations. Damp can also be a factor for properties bordering the Bog. I take extra care with these homes, planning cable routes to avoid unnecessary damage and checking for any moisture-related issues that could affect electrical safety.

EV chargers and garden offices
The estates in Dringhouses were built with driveways, which makes EV charger installation straightforward. Garden offices are increasingly popular too — I'll run a proper dedicated armoured cable supply rather than the extension-lead-through-a-window approach. Both are notifiable work, and I handle the paperwork and building control notification as part of the job.

"Lovely from start to finish — practical and reasonably priced."

Why choose me for electrical work in Dringhouses?

I'm a one-man operation — which means the person who answers your call is the same person who surveys the job, does the work, and signs it off. No call centres, no subcontractors, no "I'll pass that on."

Before I became an electrician, I spent 15 years in customer insight — understanding what people actually need, not just what they ask for. That background means I approach every job differently: I'll ask what you're trying to achieve, then suggest the best way to get there.

I'm NICEIC approved, City & Guilds qualified, fully insured, and I have a 5.0 star rating from 48 Google reviews. I explain everything in plain English, I give clear estimates before work starts, and I leave your home cleaner than I found it.

Common questions from Dringhouses homeowners

My 1960s house still has the original fuse board — is that a problem?

It's not immediately dangerous, but it's well past its best. Original fuse boards from the 1960s use rewirable fuses — if a fault develops, the fuse wire melts to break the circuit. The problem is they don't react fast enough to prevent electric shock the way a modern RCD does. A consumer unit upgrade is the single best safety improvement you can make. Think of it as upgrading from a seatbelt to a full airbag system — both help, but one is significantly better.

We live near Askham Bog — does damp affect electrics?

It can, yes. Persistent damp can degrade cable insulation over time, cause corrosion at connection points, and reduce the effectiveness of earthing. If your property has damp issues, it's worth having the electrics checked alongside any damp treatment work. I'll look for signs of moisture damage during any inspection and advise accordingly.

Can you add outdoor sockets and lighting in my garden?

Absolutely. Outdoor circuits need to be properly protected with RCD devices and installed using weather-rated fittings and cable. I can add weatherproof sockets for power tools, garden lighting on timers or sensors, and dedicated circuits for hot tubs or outbuildings. It all gets certified and notified to building control as required.

Typical costs

Every job is different, but here's a rough guide:

EICRFrom £180 + VAT (up to 6 circuits), £15 per extra circuit
Consumer Unit UpgradeFrom £600 + VAT — fitted with RCBOs as standard
House RewireApprox. £1,800 + VAT per bedroom — durable, reliable materials as standard
