When you need an immersion heater electrician

Immersion heaters are the electrical element that heats water in a hot water cylinder — distinct from a combi boiler, which heats water on demand. They’re common in York properties without gas, in properties with solar thermal or heat pump systems where electricity is the backup heat source, and in flats where a dedicated hot water cylinder serves that property.

New installation — circuit and element

A new immersion heater installation requires a dedicated 20A circuit from the consumer unit, terminated at a 20A double-pole fused switch near the cylinder. The element itself fits into the hot water cylinder. If a timer or smart control is wanted, this replaces the standard switch.

Element replacement

Immersion heater elements fail over time — typically 5–10 years of regular use. Signs include no hot water despite the switch being on, the circuit tripping repeatedly, or scorch marks on the wiring at the element connection. Element replacement is the most common repair, typically a half-day job.

Thermostat replacement

If the immersion runs but water doesn’t heat correctly or overheats, the thermostat is often the cause. Thermostat replacement is straightforward if the element is in good condition.

Timer or smart controller

Running an immersion heater without a timer means it runs continuously — expensive. A timer switch is a straightforward like-for-like replacement of the standard double-pole switch. Smart WiFi immersion controllers are also available and allow app-based control and off-peak scheduling.

Economy 7 and off-peak heating

If you’re on an Economy 7 or similar off-peak electricity tariff, immersion heating overnight at the cheaper rate and storing hot water in an insulated cylinder is a cost-effective approach. This requires a timer set to run during the off-peak hours (typically 11pm–7am) and a well-insulated cylinder that holds the heat through the day.

For properties with solar PV, a smart immersion controller can divert excess solar generation to the immersion heater rather than exporting it to the grid. This effectively gives you free hot water during sunny periods. These controllers (such as the iBoost or SolarEdge diverter) are fitted in place of the standard switch and require no change to the existing circuit.
