Electrical work in Askham Bryan

Two conservation area villages
Askham Bryan's conservation area dates from 1980 and Askham Richard's from 1975 — covering virtually the entire village in each case. Askham Richard has a particularly unspoilt character, with its elongated green and pond as the focal point, plus St Mary's Church with its late 12th century origins and a Saxon doorway discovered during restoration. Electrical work in these properties needs careful cable routing — I use existing voids, roof spaces, and skirting runs to keep installations discreet.

Agricultural and rural properties
With Askham Bryan College nearby and agricultural land surrounding both villages, I occasionally work on farm buildings, outbuildings, and larger rural properties. Whether it's power to a workshop, lighting for a yard, or upgrading ancient wiring in a farmhouse, I'll assess what's there and give you a clear estimate.

Common questions

Both villages are conservation areas — does that affect what electrical work I can do?

Conservation area status doesn't prevent electrical work. The main consideration is keeping cable routes discreet — avoiding visible surface-mounted trunking on front elevations. For listed buildings specifically, some alterations may need listed building consent, and I can advise on what does and doesn't require it.

Our farmhouse hasn't been rewired since the 1960s — is that a problem?

Potentially, yes. 1960s wiring is 60+ years old and the insulation may be degrading. An EICR will tell us the actual condition. Some properties of this age just need a consumer unit upgrade; others need a full rewire. I'll give you an honest assessment either way.
