Your local electrician in Heworth

I'm Frankie — an NICEIC approved electrician based in York, covering Heworth, Heworth Green, and the surrounding streets. Heworth sits just northeast of the city centre — a mix of Edwardian terraces along East Parade and Heworth Road, 1950s council housing towards Tang Hall, and newer builds. Whether it's a rewire, a smart thermostat, or a consumer unit upgrade, I'll explain everything clearly and give you an honest estimate before any work starts.

Electrical work in Heworth — what I typically see

Edwardian terraces — East Parade, Heworth Road, Fifth Avenue
Heworth's terraces were built in the early 1900s, slightly later than the Victorian terraces in South Bank and Holgate. They're typically a little wider and airier, but the electrical challenges are similar: rubber-insulated cable from the original installation, patchwork additions from later decades, and consumer units that don't offer modern protection. A full rewire is usually the right answer for properties that haven't been updated. These terraces have solid walls, so cable routing needs to work with the building — through floor voids, behind skirting boards, and using existing channels rather than chasing fresh routes through old plaster.

1950s housing — Heworth to Tang Hall border
Moving east towards Tang Hall, the housing shifts to 1950s council-built semis and terraces. These properties have a different set of electrical issues: the wiring is typically lead-sheathed or early PVC cable, and the original consumer units are long overdue for replacement. A consumer unit upgrade with RCBOs is the priority here — it gives you modern circuit-by-circuit protection without the disruption of a full rewire, as long as the cable itself is still in reasonable condition. An EICR will tell us what you need.

Smart home installations — Nest, Hive, and smart lighting
Heworth's mix of young professionals and families means I get a lot of requests for smart home technology. Nest and Hive thermostats are the most common — they replace your existing thermostat and programmer, connecting to your heating system via your Wi-Fi. Installation is straightforward, but the wiring at the thermostat location sometimes needs adjusting (especially in older properties). I'll install it, configure the app, walk you through how to use it, and make sure everything's working before I leave. I also fit smart lighting systems, automated switches, and video doorbells.

Landlord EICRs and rental properties
Heworth has a significant proportion of rental properties, particularly the terraces closer to the city centre. Landlords need an EICR at least every five years under current regulations. I work with landlords and letting agents across Heworth — handling the inspection, the report, and any remedial work efficiently so your property stays compliant without unnecessary delays between tenancies.

Why choose me over other electricians in Heworth?

I'm a one-man operation — the person who answers your call is the same person who surveys the job, does the work, and signs it off. No call centres, no subcontractors.

Before I became an electrician, I spent 15 years in customer insight — understanding what people actually need, not just what they ask for. That background means I approach every job differently: I'll ask what you're trying to achieve, then suggest the best way to get there.

I'm NICEIC approved, City & Guilds qualified, fully insured, and I have a 5.0 star rating from 48 Google reviews. I explain everything in plain English, I give clear estimates before work starts, and I leave your home cleaner than I found it.

What my customers say

"I had Bright Sparks fit my Nest thermostat and couldn't be happier with the job. From the first contact they were friendly, professional, and quick to respond. The engineer arrived on time, explained everything clearly, and made sure the setup was working perfectly before leaving. They even took the time to show me how to use all the smart features properly. Really tidy, efficient, and knowledgeable — I'd definitely use them again."

Common questions from Heworth homeowners

What's the difference between lead-sheathed cable and rubber cable?

Both are old wiring types that you'll find in Heworth properties. Rubber-insulated cable (common in pre-1950s homes) has a dark fabric outer sheath and the rubber degrades over time, crumbling away from the conductors. Lead-sheathed cable has a grey metallic outer covering — the lead itself lasts well, but the rubber insulation inside still degrades. Both types are past their safe working life and a rewire is usually recommended. An EICR will confirm which type you have and what condition it's in.

Will a Nest thermostat work with my old boiler?

In most cases, yes. Nest is compatible with the vast majority of UK combi and system boilers. The main requirement is that your current thermostat location has the right wiring connections — some older setups only have two wires where Nest needs three. I'll check compatibility before starting, and if any wiring adjustments are needed, I'll sort them as part of the installation.

How often do landlords need an EICR?

At least every five years, or at every change of tenancy if the certificate is due to expire during the new tenancy. The regulations apply to all private landlords in England — it's not optional. I can carry out the inspection, issue the report, and handle any remedial work that's needed, all in one visit where possible. See my EICR guide for the full details.

Typical costs

Every job is different, but here's a rough guide:

EICR From £180 + VAT (up to 6 circuits), £15 per extra circuit
House Rewire Approx. £1,800 + VAT per bedroom — durable, reliable materials as standard
Consumer Unit Upgrade From £600 + VAT — fitted with RCBOs as standard

These are estimates — I always survey first and give you a clear written estimate before starting any work. See full pricing →
